Just west of Uptown Charlotte, in the historic Wesley Heights neighborhood, an old church building has a new life. The Arches converted the church into 14 modern townhomes, and Remodel CLT was hired by the developer, Whitestone Holdings Inc., to complete the interior work for all 14 units.
It was one of the most rewarding projects our team has ever worked on. Here's how it came together.
Building in a Historic District
Wesley Heights was designated a local historic district by Charlotte City Council in 1995, and the project's design had to be approved by the Charlotte Historic District Commission (WCNC). The church's exterior was kept. Inside, the challenge was to create fully modern homes while keeping the character that makes the building special.
Keeping the Character

Some original features were kept and built around:
- Stained-glass windows, now the centerpiece of kitchens and bathrooms
- Arched wood-plank ceilings that give the building its name
- Exposed original brick
Working around these features meant custom measuring, careful protection during construction and plenty of problem-solving. Old buildings rarely have a straight wall or a level floor.
What Remodel CLT Built

Across every townhome, our team completed:
- Kitchens: white shaker cabinets, white quartz countertops, subway tile backsplashes and peninsulas with seating
- Bathrooms: large-format porcelain tile showers and tub surrounds with niches, hex mosaic shower floors, quartz-topped vanities, frameless glass and powder rooms with modern fixtures
- Flooring and stairs: LVP throughout, with matching stair treads and white risers
- Laundry rooms: patterned blue-and-white tile floors
- Interior doors, drywall, trim and paint in every unit
- Rooftop terraces with paver decks and metal railings

Managing a Multi-Unit Project
Building out 14 homes at once is very different from remodeling a single house. It takes:
- Consistent quality, so every kitchen and every bathroom is finished to the same standard
- Careful scheduling of trades from unit to unit
- Flexibility when the building throws surprises at you, which historic buildings always do
- Clear communication with the developer at every stage
